AFC Wimbledon manager Neal Ardley blasted his charges' lack of professionalism after their FA Cup first round defeat to non-League Forest Green Rovers.

Falling behind after six minutes to a Darren Carter strike, the Dons drew level when Callum Kennedy smashed the ball into the top corner from just inside the area.

Ardley’s side controlled the majority of the game thereafter without creating any clear-cut opportunities against the leaders of the National League.

They were made to pay three minutes into injury time when Elliott Frear cut in from the right and fizzed a low effort into the bottom corner.

After the painful 2-1 defeat, Ardley said: “Unprofessional is the word, by our standards.

“Professionalism is coming out and starting the game on the front-foot, doing the stuff that we’ve been doing for many weeks now and making sure you see games out at the other end.

Leveller: Callum Kennedy's second goal in as many games hauled the Dons level against Forest Green Rovers, but the day would end on a losing note

“That’s professional, and we for some reason, for a team that’s just won three on the trot and played really well, we came out and looked really anxious for the first 10 minutes.

“We just lacked that cutting edge in the final third, and then that unprofessionalism in the last five minutes when they’ve never threatened, and we’ve then given away two or three really silly free-kicks and let a left-footer playing on the right cut-in and get off a shot through bodies. You’re asking for trouble.”

Ardley also admitted going out of the cup so early was a missed opportuninty, but also that they must now react quickly.

“I’m gutted, I’m really sorry to the fans, because the FA Cup can be exciting.

“I wanted to get to the third round and beyond and last season when we drew Liverpool, we won four out of five prior to it and went on a great run. That can be motivation in itself,” he said.

“We’ve got to react. We’ve got a tough game next week - Portsmouth away, for me one of the best teams in the league, and we have to react. We have to come in, train for that game and try and bounce back.”
