Royal Mid Surrey Golf Club professional Matthew Paget and amateur partner Gregor McQuattie celebrated breifly on an otherwise frustrating day at Walton Heath Golf Club on Wednesday.

The pair holed four birdies between  them during their Lombard Trophy Pro-Am qualifying campaign but a triple bogey at the 15th and three other dropped shots cost them dear.

Paget, 41, and 34-year-old St Margarets advertising director McQuattie had been playing for a place in the £80,000 grand final of Europe’s largest pro-am event at Gleneagles on September 1 and 2.

But they were left disappointed as they finished on two over on the day for a share of 45th place.

Wildernesse Club pro David Green, 38, and 44-year-old oil and gas investment company director Thomas Wagenhofer triumphed on nine under and claimed the £475 first prize and a dream trip to Scotland.

Leatherhead Golf Club professional Adam Hinton and amateur partner Chris Read shot one under for a tie of 25th place.
