AFC Wimbledon boss Neil Ardley praised Joe McDonnell after the young goalkeeper’s impressive performance against Southend United.

The 20-year-old made his first league start for the club after James Shea was ruled out with an ankle injury.

McDonnell was called into action on several occasions during a match largely dominated by the visitors and Ardley was pleased with what he saw from the youngster.

“I thought for a young lad he was excellent. He was very, very confident,” said Ardley.

“Obviously it was difficult kicking against the wind in the second half, but all in all I thought he was excellent.

“I think the back four in front of him really did a good job as well.”

Ardley is unsure of a return date for Shea, but says he is confident in the abilities of the young players in the squad.

“Shea could be out for three or even six weeks but we don’t know yet,” he said.

“Let’s see how that one goes. For now we will do what we always do at this club and that’s give the younger ones a chance if it arises.

“McDonnell has done a good job tonight so until he shows us otherwise we will show confidence in our youngsters.”
