AFC Wimbledon manager Neal Ardley reckons naivety sent his side crashing to a third successive defeat of the year at home to Carlisle United.

Despite Adebayo Akinfenwa’s opener in the first minute, the Dons were undone through goals from Sean O'Hanlon, Steven Rigg and substitute David Amoo.

Ardley was disappointed with the result, which saw his side slip to 13th in League Two, having dominated the game and firing 22 shots on the visitors’ goal.

“We played well in spells but what we did wrong was have a naivety and lack of balance in our play,” said the Dons’ boss.

“I think our work ethic when we lose the ball needs to be better. Today they were able to break on us too easily and that caused our undoing.

“The full-backs were flying forward and that’s probably why we were a bit bare in the midfield, we didn’t patrol that area well enough.

“We had real tempo to our play but we lost the game because we didn’t perform well enough in both boxes.”

Great start: Adebayo Akinfenwa enjoys the opening goal

Dons took the lead with the game’s first attack after Akinfenwa turned in Callum Kennedy’s cross, the striker’s ninth league goal of the campaign.

Carlisle equalised in the 16th minute, O’Hanlon heading home a Kyle Dempsey free-kick, and took the lead 10 minutes after the break through Steven Rigg.

Wimbledon pushed for an equaliser but a combination of fine keeping from Mark Gillespie and goal-line clearances from his defence preserved the Cumbrians lead before Amoo made the points safe deep into stoppage-time.

“We threw everything at it and on another day we score,” said Ardley.

“We know we are a decent team but we need to get the balance right and the knowhow to win games.”
