Tooting striker eager to make his mark

Phil Williams admits the chance to prove a point to former boss Alan Dowson was a key factor in his decision to join Tooting & Mitcham.

The ex-Kingstonian forward arrived at Imperial Fields last week after switching from Ryman Division One South side Godalming Town, where he smashed an impressive 28 goals last season.

And the striker, who struck eight goals in his one season at Kingsmeadow (2008/9), is looking forward to more of the same when he turns out for the Terrors this campaign.

Williams said: “I was happy at Godalming but I was eager to test myself at a higher level and when the Tooting offer came along I was very interested.

“Then when I realised I would get the chance to play against Kingstonian that was a very juicy bonus and pretty much made up my mind.

“When I was at Ks the boss used me mostly as a sub and when he did play me it was as a winger.

“I am not a winger, I am a striker and I never felt I was given a fair chance to prove myself up front.

“I moved to Godalming, got put up front and the goals came straight away.”

The Clapham Junction-based forward, who works as a football coach, is expected to partner fellow new-signing Rob Haworth as part of a new-look Tooting frontline.

And the 26-year-old cannot wait to get started.

Williams added: “This is a real challenge for me and I am really excited about it.

“I am under no illusions about how difficult it is going to be, but scoring goals is what I do and I am very confident that will be the case again.

“Another 25 this year would be great but I just want to do well and help the team to succeed.”
