Sutton United embark on their final long journey this weekend – at least for a few weeks – with boss Paul Doswell pleased about their points return, so far.

United make the 400-round trip to Wrexham on Saturday, looking to build on their haul of four points from four games.

Last weekend’s 1-0 defeat at Gateshead was United’s second consecutive on the road, but Doswell insists the long treks have been fruitful both on and off the field.

And he knows just what they need to do to get anything from the trip to Wales.

“We’ll be going into a game in front of about 4,000 fans, and if Wrexham get up a head of steam, they can be very good,” he said.

“But we also know that if Wrexham don’t start well and we do, then the crowd can also become restless.

“It’s the classic go away from home and make sure you’re solid in that first 20 minutes.”

He added: “At Gateshead we created five great chances – we hit the bar, post and had two cleared off the line, I could not have asked for more.

“They had one attack they scored from it, but that’s football. The minimum we deserved was a point – their manager said they’ve had no luck all season, and then they had it all on Saturday.

“But we have four points from four away days and I am happy with that.

“We have played Lincoln, Forest Green, Chester and Gateshead – they are all big, well-funded clubs, and to get a point from each of those is great.

“We are not viewing it as wins and losses, we’re viewing it as can we get a point away from home, and can we win our home games – if we had beaten Solihull we would have hit every target.”

Doswell reckons the long journeys are also a fine time for team bonding, and the squad stayed in Newcastle on Saturday night to enjoy a lads’ night out.

This weekend, Dan Wishart should be back on the bench, although is unlikely to feature, while Joe Morrell has returned to Bristol City, and Simon Downer remains suspended.

Craig Dundas has joined Tonbridge Angels on loan, while Shaun Cooper and Craig McAllister have been starting games on loan at Eastbourne Borough.
