It was great to see Sutton United back at their absolute best on Saturday, with an excellent 4-1 win.

Moreover, it cut Ebbsfleet’s lead at the top of the National League South table to 10 points and moved United back up into second place.

Despite a fairly slow first 20 minutes the game never looked like going Margate’s way and there might even have been more goals – only Bedsente Gomis will know quite how he missed his chance from about two yards out in the second half!

To be fair to Gomis, that was just about the only time he put a foot wrong in what was an excellent game for him capped off with a goal.

Ryan Burge was another cause for positivity, looking lively in his debut and getting a goal himself, albeit with a slice of fortune helping him out.

It was something of a surprise that Margate, coached by United legend Jamie Stuart, finished the game with 11 players on the pitch given the multitude of fouls they committed, although Lewis Taylor did manage to get himself sent off after the full-time whistle after appearing to square up to the assistant referee.

Paul Doswell’s men travel to St Albans next week, a side they beat 5-0 in January.

However a tougher test can be expected this time round given that the Saints put six goals past Whitehawk without reply on Saturday to take them off the bottom of the league and reignite survival hopes.

St Albans is a lovely place and with a direct train running there from Sutton it would be great to see a large number of our excellent supporters there to get behind the team and help them on the way to another victory.
