Sutton United “legend” Craig Dundas will keep on playing until his body gives up.

The midfielder clocked 400 appearances for United last weekend it the 2-0 win over Dartford at Gander Green Lane.

A special presentation ahead of the National League South clash celebrated the 34-year-old’s remarkable achievement, and he responded by helping the side to its seventh consecutive win.

Goals from Dan Fitchett and Craig McAlllister secured the points over their title rivals from Kent that lifted United to nine points behind leaders Ebbsfleet.

However, the day belonged to Dundas, who hit the milestone a little over nine years after making his debut in 2007 at Hayes & Yeading, where he scored in a 3-3 draw.

“I never thought I would reach this number. I remember that first game really well and we were 3-0 down by half-time, and I thought ‘What have I signed up for here’,” he said.

“Fortunately we pulled it back to 3-3, but we still ended up being relegated.

“At that time there were a few players who did not want to be at the club, and then Paul [Doswell] came in and ripped it up.

“I started afresh, and from then it has gone on from strength to strength. The club has been pushing on, meaning better players want to come and join, and that is all down to the gaffer.”

He added: “I love the club. I have been at a few clubs in my career, but this is the most professional. It was professional even before Dos arrived, and he cranked it up to another level and keeps pushing it on, and that is what keeps me at the club.”

Dundas, who has also turned out for Carshalton Athletic, Hampton & Richmond and Croydon, has scored 95 goals in his 400 appearances.

And he is back among the goals this season with 11 in all competitions, and that is something to do with his current form and those around him.

“I am probably in some of the best form I have ever been in,” he said.

“I normally chip away at the goals during the season, but I have to continuously keep up with the rest of the team because there is such good competition.

“Every position is strong, we have about 17 players and couple on loan and they could all be playing at any given time. It is honestly one of the strongest squads since I have been there.”

The fans’ favourite turns 35 next month, and has taken up a role as strength and conditioning coach at the club, meaning he will be a fixture at the Lane long after he finally hangs up his boots – whenever that may be.

“I will keep going until the body gives up I will keep going,” he said.

“I know I am in the last few years of playing so I am just enjoying it. You never know, we might be having this conversation again if I hit 500 appearances.”
