Damien Scannell has worked out the maths and come up with a simple equation – if Sutton United win every game until the end of the season, they will be promoted to the Skrill Premier.

The winger’s former employers, Eastleigh, top the Skrill South, with United five points behind in third and Bromley sandwiched in between.

Tuesday night’s 2-0 win over FA Trophy finalists Gosport Borough – thanks to goals from Gavin McCallum and Jamie Taylor – stretched United’s unbeaten run to 11 games.

It also opened a 12-point buffer between United and the play-off zone trapdoor, but the play-offs come a distant second on Scannell’s agenda.

“Gosport was a tough game, but we put in a professional performance and that is what champions do,” he said.

“People keep talking about the play-offs, but we want to win the league. Forget Eastleigh and forget the others, that is how we are looking at it.”

He added: “But, at the end of the day, we know that if we win every game, we will go up. It is as simple as that.”

Goal man: Damien Scannell is mobbed after his opener against Basingstoke last weekend

Scannell signed at Gander Green Lane at the beginning of the season, and has taken time to find his feet.

He has bagged four goals so far, with two of them coming in the past three games as he goes from strength to strength.

He said: “I was out of favour at Eastleigh and when I signed for United I was injured, and did not do pre-season.

“But now I am feeling the benefits of playing every game, I am playing a more central and I get more of the ball, which is what I prefer.”

McCallum’s strike against Gosport was his fourth for United since rejoining the club from Woking in December.

The striker has enjoyed a run in the team after Jamie Slabber picked up an injury, and now boss Paul Doswell says it is his place to keep.

He said: “Gavin has done well. He’s had to wait patiently for his chance and he’s putting Jamie [Taylor] and Jamie [Slabber] under pressure, which is what you want from your strikers.”

United head to bottom club Dorchester Town this weekend without in-form skipper Charlie Clough, who starts a two-match suspension.
