A free beer might lift the mood at Hampton & Richmond Borough on Saturday, but boss Alan Dowson knows there is no quick fix, writes Sam Elliott.

The Beavers face VCD Athletic at the Beveree this weekend and the Ryman Premier League game has been classified as a Pay What You Want match.

Fans can set their own entrance fee for the match, but Steve McPherson, right, has promised a free pint or a plate of chips to those choosing to pay for a full price ticket.

Dowson’s side, who beat Met Police 2-1 in the Robert Dyas League Cup first round on Tuesday, go in to the game on the back of successive league defeats to Leatherhead (5-1) and Tonbridge Angels (2-0), having started the new manager’s reign with a four match unbeaten run.

And the Beveree chief has warned changes are on the way unless his side return to winning ways in front of a bumper crowd at the weekend, “It’s crystal clear now the size of the task in hand. We won’t shirk it – even if that means we have to rebuild a little,” he said.

“Saturday is a big day for the club.

“Hopefully, we get a big crowd through the turnstiles, they see the team perform well and will want to return to watch us again in the future.”
