Hampton & Richmond Borough skipper Stuart Lake reckons Saturday's FA Cup triumph over Arlesey Town was the Beavers at their best.

A Charlie Moone hat-trick and goals from Dan Thompson and substitute James Simmonds saw off their Southern League Premier Division rivals 5-1 at the Beveree on Saturday.

Joint-boss Paul Barry's team slipped behind early on, but once Moone levelled matters moments later there was only one team likely to win as Hampton controlled the game.

Experienced defenders Justyn Roberts and former Brentford centre back Darren Powell kept Arlesey's ex-Fulham star Barry Hayles very quiet, while Moone, Thompson, Joe Turner and Tom Hickey were a constant threat going forward.

Hampton have struggled for form in the Ryman Premier League this term leaving them 17th in table after 11 games, and Lake hoped Saturday's showing was a sign of better things to come.

"We were pretty comfortable and looked good. I thought we were the better side all the way through," he said after the thumping cup win.

"We controlled the game, controlled the midfield and looked good going forward.

"Justyn has looked solid since he has come in and Darren won everything today.

"We had good shape, we were winning the ball higher up the pitch and allowing our ball players to get forward.

"It is the best we've played this year. We've been building towards this for a few weeks and, hopefully, we can push on."

The win secured the club a place in the fourth qualifying round - one match from potentially drawing former Premier League side Wolverhampton Wanderers - and £7,500 in prize money.

And Lake hailed the influence of in-form marksman Moone.

"Charlie scores goals, that is what he is there for," he added.

"He is an intelligent footballer. He drops deep, plays it off the side and he can finish.

"Give him a chance he can finish.

"He'll be looking to push on this year with his performances. I thought he was excellent today.

"He took his goals well and he looks likely to score all the time."
