They say you can make your own luck and Chertsey Town’s emphatic Combined Counties League win over mid-table Cove might well have proved the point.

There were elements of good fortune attached to all of Chertsey’s goals but there could never be any doubt that the four-goal gap was not well deserved.

The home side worked with industry and a confidence not seen this side of Christmas and it was their relentless pressure than won the points.

Cove were reduced to one half chance in the early stages. That fell to Steve Duff, but his header from a left wing cross, went straight into the arms of Chertsey goalkeeper Craig Bradshaw.

Otherwise, there was never any real doubt where the points were heading in this rich Curfew confectionary, topped off with icing supplied by an Andy Crossley hat trick, the youngest player on the pitch.

His age and inexperience has kept him from commanding a regular starting place in the Chertsey line up.

But patience and persistence is now being rewarded, and although still only 17 years old, Crossley looked stronger than ever and gave his best over performance seen in the season and a half spent so far at Alwyns Lane.

On a well prepared playing surface despite the wet weather, Tom O’Regan returned as a starter again and was far more livelier than seen of late. He replaced Dan Bennett who came back off the bench on midway through the second half.

Although the line up was similar to Chertsey’s recent outings, it looked like a completely different team. The passing had more purpose and a hunger for success looked to have returned.

Only when a two goal lead had been established midway through the first half did a hint of the over elaborate forward movement that has blighted the performances in the deep winter re-emerge.

The half time whistle put that trait on pause and the interval dressing room chat did the rest as Town returned to positive play after the turnaround. Too many flabby offside situations also marred Town’s attacking potential in the first half.

Traffic throughout the match was pretty well one sided, starting from the first minute when Marcus Moody was set up well but miss hit a twelve yard strike with space in front of him.

O’Regan showed some of his old form when cutting in and beating three defenders, to fire in a powerful shot that Aaron France just managed to parry away.

Chertsey kept pressing and the inevitable goal came on 20 minutes. Crossley received the ball just outside the penalty area and poked the ball forward.

One limb from a forest of intervening legs looked certain to either smash the ball home from close range or hoof the ball clear but no contact was made by anyone and it scuttled over the line to everyone’s bemusement.

Cove suddenly made Chertsey work hard to consolidate their lead with industry providing an implied threat from the midfield but Town’s defence rose to the challenge with Leika Saku giving his best performance for his side since joining in late September.

A second goal then totally squashed any hint of a Cove fight back.

Chertsey still looked strong in attack when the ball was fed out wide to the right. It looked a lost cause for Saku as he lost, won, then lost possession again but in the process, blocked the attempted clearance by Cove’s Tom McGarry.

The ball flew straight to the centrally stationed Crossley. He showed patience and maturity in adjusting the angles and fashioning a sublime curling shot round France from 20 yards.

The opening moments of the second half totally quashed Cove when more pressure two minutes from the restart resulted in a goalkeeper clearance that only went as far as the edge of his penalty area.

There, Chertsey defender Trevor Charlery stuck out a foot and connected with the ball. It hit the deck with enough force to then balloon over France’s head and into the net.

It did not look likely that scoring would stop there either. A double strike from Dean Papali on the hour was twice beaten away.

A double substitution on 65 minutes with Matt Baxter and Dan Bennett on to replace Phil Page and Dean Papali kept up the momentum and goal number four arrived on 70 minutes when Bennett was caught late providing the golden opportunity for Crossley to secure his trio from the penalty spot.

He completed the task comfortably after sending France in the wrong direction.

Chertsey might easily have notched one more towards the end when Bennett broke through a posse of Cove defenders and thumped the ball against the underside of the cross bar.

It fell nicely for Moody who slotted home but celebrations were cut short by an offside flag.

For once, the disappointment was not profound as Chertsey had already secured the victory with plenty to spare.

It was as well that the defence did an excellent job of protecting goalkeeper Craig Bradshaw as he was obliged to nurse his strained back throughout the full 90 minutes.
