Carshalton Athletic midfielder Lewis Taylor inspired his new team to Surrey County Cup victory over his old team, and he is looking for more of the same in the league.

The Robins came from behind to beat AFC Wimbledon 3-1 in Wednesday night’s second round tie at Colston Avenue, with Taylor bagging the equaliser to Tom Beere’s opener.

However, away from the knock-out competition, Carshalton remain rooted to the bottom of the Ryman Premier League, and travel to fellow strugglers Enfield Town this Saturday.

Taylor, who rejoined the Robins from Skrill South Whitehawk last month, said: “This result gives us a boost and keeps the cup run going, but our main focus is on improving our league position.

“We’ve played some good football in our last three league games but silly mistakes have cost us points, so we must replicate a performance like this one and keep adding goals to our approach play.”

A youthful Dons team, with first team manager Neil Ardley watching from the stands, took a sixth minute lead but Taylor bundled home the equaliser just before the break.

Taylor also had a hand in the second half goals from strikers Tommy Bradford, his ninth of the season, and Kingsley Aikhionbare that sealed a place in the third round.

“It’s always nice to play well against an old team and to score made it even better,” Taylor said.

“They were quite a good side and looking to impress the first team boss but we showed great character to compose ourselves, get back in it and then control the game in the second-half.

He added: “It’s always going to take time for me to settle into a new squad but we are getting there.

“The ability we have in our changing room is second to none and I’m confident we can get out of the relegation zone.

“I knew the challenge I’d be facing by coming to Carshalton, but I enjoyed my time here last season and knowing Ian Hazel was in charge was another positive factor.”
