Carshalton Athletic’s Steve Butterworth earned his side a point from the 1-1 draw against Canvey Island on Saturday and then called for the Robins to push on, writes James Barrett.

Carshalton fell behind to a 50th minute penalty but Butterworth, who’d only been on the pitch four minutes, took down a flick on inside the Canvey box and dinked the ball past the oncoming goalkeeper with 15 minutes to go.

“We’ve played better than that and lost so, while our performance was a bit flat, a point after going behind isn’t too bad on reflection,” said the forward.

“Tommy Williams told me to get among their defenders and try to create something. It got a little stuck under my feet but I managed to angle it towards the top corner.".

That goal made Butterworth the club’s joint current top goalscorer on four, but he and his manager were grateful to see young full-back Paris Hamilton-Downes make a goal-line clearance from a Canvey header in added time to cement the result.

Thamesmead Town and Cray Wanderers, the only two clubs below Carshalton in the league, each won on Saturday to edge closer to the Robins but Butterworth believes the Robins need to concentrate on those directly above themselves.

“We’ve got to focus on catching those just above us,” he said.

“No-one can predict on the day how any game at this level will go, Hornchurch only nicked a 2-1 result against us last Tuesday. Hopefully we can go on from this result to push on and pick up some more points.”
