Harper happy with Hampton bonding

Hampton & Richmond Borough boss Mark Harper has admitted an enforced winter break had re-affirmed his belief his men can survive in the Blue Square South this season.

The Beavers saw Saturday’s FA Trophy trip to Macclesfield Town to face Northwich Victoria fall foul of the freezing weather, while Tuesday’s rescheduled clash also went the same way.

Saturday’s league visit to Boreham Wood remains a doubt, while there will be question marks over whether Tuesday’s third attempt to play the Trophy tie – at Nantwich FC – goes ahead.

And Harper insisted the break, which has left Hampton without a game since last Tuesday’s 4-1 win over East Thurrock United, has brought the club closer together.

“We managed to train on Saturday and the chairman paid for us to go to a health club on Tuesday night, where we worked the boys hard,” he said.

“The biggest positive for me is everyone still has the right attitude. The banter is good. Everyone is upbeat.

“There is no one whinging or moaning about working hard and we are all together.

“With Dave Tarpey on fire we have a chance.”

Harper signed 20-year-old Staines Town winger Warren Harris during the week having persuaded him to trade one relegation battle for another.

And while Harper is still looking to add experience to his squad, he admitted beggers could not be choosers.

“Experienced players in the areas we need them, come at a price. I’ve spoken to a lot and we just can’t afford them,” he added.

Keeper Matt Lovett is closing in on a return to fitness, but will be sent out on loan to get match sharp.

“Given the form of our current keeper Craig Ross, Matt needs to get match fit to even think about challenging for a starting slot,” added Harper.
