Sutton United look set to be handed a double boost after striker Charlie Taylor switched to League Two Barnet on transfer deadline day.
The 24-year-old former Crystal Palace and Nottingham Forest youngster, who scored 12 goals in 32 appearances for United last season, moved to Underhill for an undisclosed fee on Tuesday.
Ryman League officials have confirmed the transfer is the subject of Football Association disciplinary action after Taylor - still under contract at Gander Green Lane - appeared for Premier Division crisis club Croydon Athletic in their opening day win over Folkestone Invicta.
It leaves one of Sutton’s promotion rivals facing the possibility of a points deduction if found guilty of an offence.
“The player and the club have been informed and the matter is in hand with the Football Association,” said league chairman Alan Turvey.
“If an offence has been committed any punishment will be issued by the FA before being passed on to the Ryman League to deal with.”
Taylor becomes the third Sutton player in 12 months to secure a move into the full-time ranks after Gillingham’s Stefan Payne and Lincoln City’s Gavin McCallum were initially snapped up by Fulham and Hereford United respectively, last year.
And Sutton boss Paul Doswell, who has negotiated a pre-season friendly with Barnet and a sell-on fee as part of the deal, reckons Taylor must grasp the opportunity with both hands having worked hard to get back into the Football League in recent years.
“We are getting a great reputation for getting players back it in the League football and it is great deal for the club if everyone honours the contract,” he said.
“He played virtually every game for us last season. I really hope it works out for him. He is a good finisher and has lovely ability on the ball.
“He has a chance of making it if he takes things a bit more seriously and he really needs to grasp the mettle.”
