Goalkeeper Mark Smith has returned to Brentford to save his professional career, says Hampton & Richmond Borough boss Alan Dowson.

The former QPR youngster quit the Beveree this week amid uncertainty over his future in the wake of Bees boss Mark Warburton's decision to leave Griffin Park in the summer.

Smith, out of contract in the summer, has starred for Hampton under Dowson and the Ryman Premier League boss has tipped him for a successful career.

The youngster, who signed a Brentford development squad deal last summer, had appeared to have sorted a new deal prior to the announcement of Warburton’s exit.

But has returned to his parent club to get clarity on where his future lies.

A source close to the player expects a decision on Smith’s future to be made in the next few days.

Smith is thought to be highly rated by the Brentford playing staff and management, but boss Warburton’s scheduled departure has left the player in limbo.

And Dowson, who would love to have the keeper's services for the remainder of the season, reckons he will become a top professional even if he does not land a new deal with the Bees.

“The lad does not know where he stands because the manager is leaving, so he has left to find out one way or another,” said the Geordie.

“He has gone to find out what his future holds and I cannot blame the lad for that because he needs to get it sorted now.

“There is a lot of uncertainty about the new manager. It is shame for the lad because he has enjoyed his time here.

“A few weeks ago he had something sorted, but it is all up in the air. I’m convinced he will be alright and will become a top pro.

“His attitude is spot on and if you have that you will go a long way in the game.”

Brentford academy director Ose Aibangee, said: "Mark learned what it is like to be involved in high-pressure games with points at stake, particularly with Hampton needing to win matches.

“He will now return to us and our coaches will assess how he has improved."
