Sutton United assistant manager Micky Stephens says his resurgent side are on a roll after holding Concord Rangers to a 0-0 draw on Saturday.

The point extended United's unbeaten run to five in the Conference South ahead of Saturday's home match against Weston-super-Mare.

Glen Southam was sent off at Thames Road on 78 minutes for use of the elbow in an off-the-ball incident with the Beach Boys' Alex Woodyard.

The Sutton captain will now serve a six-match ban, but despite this setback Stephens is delighted with how United are progressing on the pitch.

Stephens said: "I think if someone had offered us a point before the game, we would have taken it.

"It is always a difficult place to go to. We are trying to win as many points as we can and a point keeps the run going.

"It probably was not a pitch that was conducive to the way we like to play. They, by their own admission, play the game in their own way," he added.

"A month or two ago we would have caved in. We stood up to be counted and we matched them."

Referee Rob Hyde brandished a straight red at Southam after assistant referee Stuart Cheek called his attention to the incident involving the Sutton midfielder and Woodyard.

Stephens was not sure what happened, but he knows United will miss their leader, who is now suspended until the Gosport Borough game on March 21.

"I did not see Glen make contact with their player. When I looked back, their player was in a crumpled heap on the floor," he said.

"Glen and the other player are the only two who I think know what happened.

"We will miss him, but that gives someone else an opportunity."

Looking ahead, Stephens sees Weston-super-Mare's visit as a chance to make amends for last month's loss at Woodspring stadium.

"First of all, we want to keep the unbeaten run going," said Stephens.

"When we went to their place, we lost 3-2 but that was not a fair reflection of the game."
