Adebayo Akinfenwa may be a tower of strength, but he reckons it is AFC Wimbledon’s strength in depth that can help erase last weekend’s FA Cup disappointment.

The Dons go to League Two high-fliers Portsmouth on Sunday looking to extend their unbeaten league run to four games.

After three consecutive wins, the Dons sit 10th in the table, just a point off the play-offs.

Akinfenwa said: “Our squad has real quality and ability, as well as strength in depth.

“If you look at the Hartlepool game, both Tom [Elliott] and I were on the bench, but Lyle [Taylor] is in ferocious form, and Ade [Azeez] is also playing well.

“That shows our strength in depth, and that is just in the frontline.

“We’re also more relaxed, and when you have a relaxed team playing to their strengths, you get results.”

Prior to the up-turn in league results, the Dons had struggled to maintain a consistency in performance, but after a few minor tweaks, the story has changed.

“We were always only ever one or two per cent off the pace,” the striker added.

“If you look at the stats, we were losing goals from set pieces, and with a few little tweaks that has really improved.

“We’ve gone on a little run with three out of three in the league, and we’re only a point off the play-offs now, that’s how tight the table is.”
