Lyle Taylor intends to make sure Cambridge have nothing to play for next weekend after AFC Wimbledon moved to within two points of guaranteeing a play-off spot.

Taylor’s first-half strike – his 20th league goal of the season - was enough to see off Leyton Orient and extend the Dons League Two winning run to five games – a new club league record.

Only Cambridge – who sit five points adrift in eighth - can upset Wimbledon’s play-off hopes and Taylor wants it taken out of their hands by winning tonight's game in hand at home to Portsmouth.

Surrey Comet:

He said: “We’ve got three games so we go out there to win all three of them, we’re not worrying about 'But what if this team do this or that team do that'.

“We play before anyone else plays again, so why not make sure that come next Saturday whoever’s chasing us has nothing to play for.”

Despite the narrow score line against Orient, the Dons rarely looked like conceding and could have won by more with Taylor and his strike partner Tom Elliott linking well throughout.

AFC WIMBLEDON: Who cares where we finish, as long as it's in the play-offs, says Ardley

But despite being unable to double their advantage, Taylor credits the way his team were able to comfortably defend a one-goal lead.

He said: “The second goal would have added comfort, but to be honest they kept throwing balls in our box and we defended that as a team brilliantly.

“We were comfortable enough and that’s as big a compliment as you can ever pay a team, that when we're put under pressure we are confident and comfortable dealing with it.”

In a late season push, Neal Ardley’s side have picked up maximum points from their past five matches to bridge a four-point gap from the play-offs and move into contention for promotion.

Now favorites to clinch that last play-off spot, Taylor reckons the hunger to succeed, not to break records, has been the motivating factor behind their recent winning form.

He said: “We want to be in the play-offs because that is an achievement, is making history, i.e a run of undefeated games, the driving force? I wouldn’t say so.

“We drive ourselves because we want to succeed.

“The hunger is the driving force behind the winning streak, so as long as we’re hungry and we want to keep winning we’re going to keep winning.

“We’ll keep working our socks off to make that happen.”
