I was pleased as punch when the Beast signed for AFC Wimbledon.

It was not just about the added goal threat and the renewed physicality up top, I was excited to see a big personality come into the side.

The first team has never been short of humble, hardworking lads ready to carry the piano.

With Adebayo Akinfenwa, however, we were getting a character straight out of comic books. For me, that’s exactly what the team needs. Larger-than-life heroes.

I know that Akinfenwa has a reputation for being a journeyman. He comes to a club, plays for a season or two, then moves on.

I never really expected much in the way of unshakeable loyalty from the Beast.

I figured he would give everything he had in the time he was here, but I never expected him to “kiss the badge” so to speak.

So you’ll forgive me if I gush over this comment he made on Twitter last weekend.

Someone asked him if he would ever play for the franchise— even if they offered free Nandos. (Nandos is, of course, the Beast’s Achilles heel.) This was his response.

Surrey Comet:

Obviously he didn’t have to say that, and I do think that sometimes fans get so wrapped up in the tribalism of football that we forget this is a job for some people.

I also don’t think it would be right to consider that tweet a legally binding document, something to hold over him later if, God forbid, he ever considered a move to a rival.

But I’m inclined to take that for what it is— a lovely gesture of commitment from our club’s biggest personality.

A simple way of saying that, for the time he’s here (at least), the club and its history is something he’s willing to fight for and defend.
