AFC Wimbledon boss Neal Ardley was almost laughing – but not quite – after another afternoon of missed chances.

Dons’ struggles in front of goal this season ended with Saturday's 1-1 draw with already-relegated Cheltenham Town at the CRRS.

Ardley reckoned the second half performance summed up the second half of their League Two campaign.

Durrell Berry put the visitors in front after 25 minutes before Jack Smith headed in the equaliser just before half-time.

The hosts pushed on in search of a winner after the break but Cheltenham goalkeeper Trevor Carson’s fine saves ensured his side would end the season with a point.

“It’s been the story of our season since January,” said Ardley.

“I don’t know what the chances count was but I’m sure it was way in our favour as it was against Wycombe, Oxford and at Dagenham and so on and so forth.

“But we just can’t take the chances and you almost have to laugh at the fact that that sums up our season.”

The result was the Dons’ forth consecutive draw at home as well as their eighth straight match without a win.

Their last win away from home came at Portsmouth on Boxing Day, and Ardley felt their struggle in front of goal was also evident against Cheltenham.

“It does boil down to what you do in both boxes and today we didn’t deal with it,” he said.

“We put ourselves behind in the game because of bad back passes and sloppy defending and then you chase the game.

“We could have had four or five but if you don’t take your chances you draw 1-1 and league football is lost by them moments in the box.

He added: “However, the boys have given everything and as always at this club, they want the team to have a real go for it and I haven’t seen a team come here since January and be better than us and I’d like you to tell me if I’m wrong.”
