Joe McDonnell admitted he is keeping the AFC Wimbledon goalkeeper jersey warm for the injured James Shea, but that does not mean he will give it up lightly.

McDonnell made his first start at the Cherry Red Records stadium in Tuesday night’s 0-0 League Two draw with Southend United.

And the 20-year-old looks set to retain his spot while regular number one recovers from a fractured ankle sustained in Saturday’s defeat at Hartlepool.

AFC Wimbledon 0-0 Southend United: Manager reaction

He made a nervy start, but settled down quickly and ended up being satisfied with his night’s work.

The former Basingstoke man said: “I feel I did well. My kicking could have improved, but other than that I’m pleased with the way I played.

“I was more nervous at Shrewsbury even though I had less time to think about it, but as soon as I touched the ball for the first time my nerves settled and everything was fine.

“You got to try and calm yourself down, but I think I coped well in the game and hopefully I can do the same on Saturday.”

McDonnell is expected to feature in the coming games with first-choice keeper Shea likely to miss at least three weeks.

And while the youngster knows it will be difficult to replace his experienced team-mate, he hopes to put up a fight.

He said: “Shea has definitely got the number one shirt but I want to try and make a name for myself.

“Hopefully that will give Shea a bit of a challenge and maybe push him on an extra step.”

After the goalless draw with Southend, Dons third without finding the back of the net, McDonnell was full of praise for his defence.

“The team had to really dig in at times and we defended well as an 11, not just as a back four,” he said.

“It was really good to come away with a clean sheet. We were a bit unlucky not to get the win but the clean sheet is definitely a bonus.

“Credit to the back four who were unbelievable, especially Dave Winfield winning every header today.”
