Sutton United embark on another, and more realistic, route to Wembley tomorrow (Saturday) when they take on Vanarama National South side Bath City in the FA Trophy at Gander Green Lane.

After causing a shock by beating League Two Cheltenham Town last weekend, the U’s won’t want to be on the receiving end of an upset this time. And with £5,000 going to the winners of the tie, United will treat Bath with the utmost respect.

Despite gunning for promotion last season, Sutton got to the Third Round of the Trophy before losing in a replay at Ryman Premier Division high fliers Bognor Regis Town.

Having made the step-up to the Vanarama National, Paul Doswell’s men will feel their aspirations of going further in this season’s competition are fully justified.

The two teams met twice in the league last season. The U’s won 3-1 at Bath’s Twerton Park base before the teams drew 1-1 at Sutton in February.

The Romans, who are managed by former Sunderland and Bristol City midfielder Gary Owers, currently sit mid-table in their division, but their league form has been poor having only won two of their last ten games.

Sutton defender Dean Beckwith continues to serve a four game suspension following his sending off in the 6-0 home defeat against Dover Athletic, but Ben Jefford, Craig McAllister and Craig Dundas will be available for selection after being cup-tied last weekend.

The departures of Ryan Burge and Chris Dickson, which were announced on Friday, won’t come as a surprise to many supporters.

Burge made an instant impression, scoring on his debut against Margate at the end of February and putting in some excellent shifts in a Sutton shirt. Sadly, he suffered a season-ending injury less than a month later at Wealdstone.

The former Port Vale midfielder was held in high regard by Sutton fans but injury and illness meant his opportunities this season were limited and he only showed glimpses of his early potential.

When Chris Dickson put pen to paper to sign for the U’s in July, it was hoped he would provide the extra firepower needed for the club’s return to the National League.

Despite showing some neat touches, Dickson struggled to fulfill his promise and failed to score a competitive goal in a Sutton shirt.

The former Charlton Athletic striker’s absence from last weekend’s cup game went largely unnoticed as United’s new frontman Matt Tubbs scored a memorable debut goal.

Sutton United v Bath City kicks off at 3pm tomorrow. There's reduced entry for adults of just £10 (concessions £5, U16s £2). More details at suttonunited.net
