It’s hard to believe that when AFC Wimbledon ran out against Sandhurst Town in 2002, Sheffield United were on the fringes of returning to the Premier League.

Back then, fixtures such as this weekend’s clash with the Blades were but the fevered dream of a mad Womble.

A dream no more. Two of Dave Bassett’s most successful clubs face-off at the Cherry Red Records stadium.

Last week's home win against Chesterfield was the just what the doctor ordered, and the manner in which we took the three points will give the dressing room a deserved lift.

However, let the result not mask the fact that we still have some way to go before we can really feel comfortable in League One.

After Chesterfield’s first goal – whoever actually scored it – Ryan Clarke and Darius Charles seemed to have a bit of a falling out.

Communication between the keeper and central defenders has been noted as a bit slack at times, and the arrival of Chris Robertson will hopefully help sort that – a change can sometimes be as good as a rest.

Like us, Sheffield United have had a bumpy start to the season, and like us they won their last game.

Our form has been similar which means one of two things: either this Saturday will witness a great game as both sides look to pull clear of the bottom pack, or it’s got rotten 0-0 draw written all over it.

And, while Lyle Taylor looks for his first league goal since the opening day of the campaign, Dominic Poleon looks like a man on the edge of a good run, and he surely has to start on Saturday.

We need a menace with composure up front more than ever, and it looks like we have one.

Whatever happens this weekend, just remember how – not – long ago we were at Sandhurst…
