Neal Ardley says capturing the signature of Tyrone Barnett would be the last piece in the AFC Wimbledon jigsaw.

The boss is in final talks with the striker, and he is confident the 30-year-old will put pen to paper very soon.

Barnett was released by Shrewsbury Town having scored 10 goals in 23 appearances, and spending the second half of last season on loan at Southend.

He would join fellow summer signings Ryan Clarke, Dom Poleon, Chris Whelpdale, Dean Parrett and Sean Kelly – who signed papers last week after a successful trial.

Ardley said: “Tyrone is the last piece of the jigsaw – we’ve got the left back in, two midfielders, the striker we wanted and the keeper we wanted - we’re just one striker away.

“We’re just trying to put the detail on it, but I am fairly confident, as confident as you can be in football, that there is nothing to get in the way.”

He added: “I don’t yet know my starting 11 for Saturday, although we have started those conversations.

“We have a lot of training to come and we will look how certain people adapt to different systems.”

“There are probably seven players who I would be surprised did not start, barring injuries, and four that I am not sure about and that might dictate the shape, depending on how we go.”
