Paul Doswell will be hoping his Sutton United charges will not put him through the mill again tonight when they travel to Ebbsfleet United.

The boss endured an unpleasant final 15 minutes in Saturday’s 1-0 win over Gosport Borough at Gander Green Lane as the visitors heaped unrelenting pressure on the United goal.

Doswell’s touchline anxiety was fuelled by United’s inability to take chances in the preceding 75 minutes, which should have seen them well clear of the formerly unbeaten Borough.

He said: “We missed seven great chances before the inevitable pressure came – and to have to watch it in that state of flux for the last 15 minutes, it was quite hard to accept.

“Ross [Worner] gets man of the match on the back of two fantastic penalty saves and two additional saves, but we should have been out of sight by half-time.”

He added: “The last 15 to 20 minutes are not overly enjoyable for a manager because all fans care about is winning and watching an entertaining game, but for me it’s been a difficult afternoon and it did not need to be.”

Football: Sutton United skipper feeling confident in the face of unbeaten Ebbsfleet

Ebbsfleet United are only one of two teams in National League South with an unbeaten record – the other being Bath City – but Doswell knows the high-spending north Kent outfit still face pressure.

“Ebbsfleet are good side, a good club with a good manager, and it is up to the rest of us to do something about the run they are on,” he said.

“The league is not won and lost in September, but Daryl [McMahon] has them playing well.

“Unlike some people who are jealous of what is going on up there, I say good luck to him because it is a different kind of pressure they are under, “But we can go there knowing we have three points from our home game. If we can get win our home games and get something away, then you will not be far away.”
