London Mayoral candidate Syed Kamall has thrown his weight behind AFC Wimbledon's bid for a new stadium.

The multi-million pound bid for the club’s homecoming to Plough Lane was expected to be discussed by Merton Council’s planning committee in July but it has been pushed back to later this year to allow time for another public consultation to take place after changes to its plans were announced.

The club’s planning application for a 20,000 seater new stadium, to be 11,000 at first, in Plough Lane, Wimbledon, was submitted in November last year.

Mr Kamall said: "Wimbledon is an ambitious club with ambitious ideas and I want to see them become the club they can be.

"I want to see Wimbledon back in its spiritual home with a stadium which reflects the enthusiasm and passion of the fans."

The decision on whether to grant planning permission for the scheme rests with the council, but there has been widespread support, and opposition, to the plans from residents, councillors and fans.

The Dons Trust launched a campaign last month to get approval for the sale of its Cherry Red Records Stadium, in the next step in the plans to bring AFC Wimbledon home to Merton.

As the ultimate owners of the club, members of the Dons Trust must give their consent if the board is to proceed with the move.

Mayor of London Boris Johnson asked for more work to be done on the application back in February but praised some aspects of the bid.

Wandsworth Council has objected to it on the grounds of transport mitigation measures and the impact on infrastructure, although it supported plans in principle.

Mr Kamall added: "Of course, where local residents and councillors have concerns they need to be addressed, but it's a club born from the grassroots and gives so much back to its community."

Mr Kamall is a Conservative Member of the European Parliament and lives in Surbiton. He wants to be the the Conservative candidate for Boris Johnson’s job as Mayor of London, vying with neighbouring MP Zac Goldsmith among other.
