AFC Wimbledon boss Neal Ardley has signed York City defender Dave Winfield on a month's loan, claiming "he fits the bill".

The 26-year-old centreback will go straight into the squad for the trip to Shrewsbury Town on Saturday.

Ardley needed to recruit after losing Alan Bennett to Cork City, Mark Phillips to suspension and Jake Goodman, Andy Frampton and Will Nightingale to injury.

Ardley told Dons Player: “Dave has been on our radar for a while. We tried to sign him during the summer but he was out of our range and we looked at him again in January before we signed Deji Oshilaja.

"We had a look at other options including young defenders, but they were players who liked to play as left sided centre backs. Deji prefers to play on the left side and we wanted someone to play alongside him.

“At this time Dave fitted the bill for us. He is a big, powerful centre back who is a good talker. With six games in 24 days coming up we needed someone like him.”
