You will not be seeing AFC Wimbledon boss Neal Ardley leaning out a car window discussing transfers on Sky Sports any time soon, but that’s not to say he knows nothing of wheeling and dealing.

Having been in the Dons hot-seat for more than two years, Ardley has had his fair share of transfer windows on which to cut his teeth.

Harry Pell’s departure to Eastleigh last week may have been a slow-burner, but the final act was lightening fast.

Eastleigh boss Richard Hill rang Ardley on Wednesday night, wanting the deal to go ahead there and then so the midfielder could join the side for training the following morning.

Such rushed deals sit comfortably on the shoulders of Ardley, but only because he has put the leg work in early doors.

He said: “In my first six months in the job it was harder because you’re learning as you go along, but I am quite comfortable with it now.

Summer signing: Neal Ardley presents Dannie Bulman to the AFC Wimbledon fans (look at that weather!)

“That’s because I have a very clear understanding of our budget and where I am in the budget.

“I am constantly updating, and speaking with, Erik [Samuelson], to make sure my figures are right, so that when things happen, and the opportunity to buy a player comes up, I know what we’ve got, what we haven’t got and whether he fits in.

“I have an understanding of how compromise agreements work and how quickly they can be done and what’s best for the club.

“So if someone wanted a player on loan, I know if it’s right for the player and the club, then I am quite quick in getting those deals done.”

He added: “I won’t be hanging out any car windows, but even if I was, I don’t think anyone would be interested in what I have go to say.”
