TRINITY MID-WHITGIFTIAN 166 S Sales 73, S Khan 5-35
HORSLEY AND SEND 171-5 S Mohammed 69
Horsley and Send won by 5 wickets
Trinity Mid-Whitgiftian dropped to fifth place in Division 3 after another poor batting display saw them comprehensively beaten by an impressive Horsley and Send side at Lime Meadow on Saturday, writes Rob Keenan.
Horsley won an important toss, electing to bowl first on a damp wicket, and their opening attack caused the batsmen problems with their accuracy and movement off the seam.
Only 10 runs came from the first eight overs which also saw opener Seb Miles bowled by Shahid Khan.
Richard Piggin edged Khan to Kael in the slips and Jesse James, having already been dropped twice, was then bowled by Randy Gayle at the other end.
Gayle trapped Wood lbw and was then gifted a third wicket by Christian Bond who played a reckless shot straight to Shah at mid-on as Mids’ top order subsided yet again to 73-5.
Mids were rescued by a stand of 91 between Stewart Sales (73) and Mike Brugnoli (40) who batted with determination and flair forcing visiting captain Jamal Khan into a number of unsuccessful bowling changes.
A good total looked achievable with fifteen overs still remaining but the innings fell apart after Sales was out caught in the deep by Grant for 73.
A woeful lower-order collapse ensued as Mids lost their last five wickets for just two runs.
Shahid Khan finished with 5-35 as Mids were bowled out for just 166.
Mark Roberts gave Mids an early boost dismissing opener Naz Hussain lbw with his first ball but Horsley’s destructive top order took their bowling apart in the overs that followed.
Saleh Mohammed scored 69 from just 50 balls with some powerful hitting and added 104 in just 13 overs with the more cultured Riaz Kael (43) as Horsley all but put the game to bed.
Chatwal eventually captured the wickets of both batsmen as Sales and Piggin claimed good catches in the field.
Horsley rather laboured to their target thereafter as the TMW bowlers enjoyed the better of the closing stages but the damage had already been done.
With the batsmen continuing to under-perform, leading wicket-taker Matt Winter nursing an injury and two other key regulars unavailable, Mids captain Richard Nowell has some problems to contend with ahead of Saturday’s visit to second-placed Woking and Horsell.
