Cheam overcome Bainbridge's heroics

11:39am Wednesday 28th July 2010

Lee Harrison and Danny Miller took five wickets each at Cheam moved up to second in Surrey Championship Division One with a 29-run win at Walton-on-Thames, writes Tim Scott.

After winning the toss on a green Ashley Park pitch, Miller chose to bat reckoning it would get more difficult as the game wore on.

David Houpapa hit 12 from the first over and shared in a half-century stand with Chris Salmons, who went on to make 53.

The loss of two quick wickets after lunch slowed Cheam and they were forced to work for every run in the face of excellent spin bowling from Paul Bainbridge (6-56).

Their final total of 226 would have been far less had Walton not dropped seven catches.

Excellent opening spells from Miller and Harrison saw Walton’s reply begin with three maidens.

Having hit opening batsman Dyer six times, the hostile Miller eventually delivered the killer blow and knocked back the off stump.

Wickets continued to fall regularly until Bainbridge, perhaps lucky to be adjudged not out from a stumping, and Houghton put on a stand of 89.

Houghton looked a class above, driving cleanly and being harsh on anything short.

But, with wickets running out, Houghton was caught by Rob Hendry for a superb 84.

It left Harrison to deliver the final blow with wickets in consecutive victories to clinch Cheam’s victory.

Cheam host East Molesey at Peaches Close this Saturday.

Cheam II claimed a winning draw from their game with Egham.

Losing the toss Kevin Brown’s men racked up 267 in 50 overs thanks to fifties from Brown and Duraisingham.

Egham were never in the hunt eventually holding out for a point 77 runs short.
