Batsman let down Fell but Park stay top

Skipper Dom Fell was left to rue poor shot selection when his top-of-the-table Worcester Park’s normally strong batting line-up let him down against Old Wimbledonians, writes Hany Mustapha.

Winning the toss, he put the Old Boys in and let his bowlers do the job.

Having beaten the Wombles in the opening game of the season despite them topping 300 runs, Fell was more than pleased when his bowlers restricted the Old Boys to just 197, with only the dangerous Bryce Lund getting going.

His innings of 71 was brought to a halt when he shuffled across his stumps and Joe Hill captured him LBW.

Rob Bell’s stand-out performance with the ball earned him excellent figures of 6-52.

Park’s reply started well with a succession of boundaries from Dexter Smith and, in particular, Rob Waite against the old-ball partnership of Redekar and Driessens delivering 32 from the first five overs.

Wickets began to fall, though, with Cezar Redekar settling swiftly into an accurate line and length.

Driessens was less consistent, and he presented Park’s best chances to score.

At 51-2, a Park win was still very achievable but poor shot selection against Redekar (7-66) proved very costly, with Park slumping to 126-8 and staring down the barrel.

When Fell joined Gary Marshall at the crease, 31 runs were added from the next six overs before Rossiter terminated Fell’s brisk innings of 11 and left the Old Boys sensing victory again.

Gary Marshall, however, had other ideas.

Batting at number nine, his superb unbeaten 32 - including nine from the penultimate over - secured the winning draw.

Worcester Park stay top, but will need to improve when Warlingham visit next week.
