Weybridge's last pair hold on to deny Sutton

Weybridge’s stubborn resistance denied Surrey Championship League leaders Sutton another victory on Saturday.

Sutton posted an impressive 258-6 wiith Zoheb Sharif (88) and John Fry (81) leading the way.

Henry Turner and David Court bowled well to contain the runs, but got no help from the pitch or atmosphere on a brighty sunny day.

Court led the way with 3-72, while he and Andy Muggleton both produced sharp throws to run Sutton batsmen out.

When Weybridge went into bat, the incoming cloud gave extra assistance to the bowlers and Oliver Slipper and Tom Winslade succumbed to Adam Sartor’s bowling with only 10 runs on the board.

Court and Will Gifford soon fell to the bowling of the captain, Phil Sampson (4-53), and it was always going to be a struggle due to the movement of the ball for rapid progress.

Abeed Janmohamed (33) joined opener Gavin Franklin in an effort to stabilise the innings and was unlucky to be adjudged out lbw off Champ.

Franklin (65) was next out and was applauded from the field by both sides in recognition of a fine innings.

Muggleton (23) was caught on the boundary and thereafter Philip Mann settled down to prevent a defeat as the overs and batsmen diminished.

He was finally joined at the wicket by Jack Barton and the pair batted doggedly for the last 10 overs to deny Sutton victory.

Weybridge visit Reigate Priory on Saturday.
