Richmond spinner Tom Hemmingway bowled his side to victory at Twickenham on Saturday and then declared the Middlesex County League Premier Division title race was far from over.

Hemmingway celebrated getting engaged last week by claiming 5-53, including the key wicket of Ts skipper Carlos Nunes, as the hosts were dismissed for 140 – 18 runs short of victory.

Richmond’s triumph, their fourth league success of the summer, moved them up to second in the league table, 16 points behind unbeaten league leaders Ealing.

Hemmingway’s heroics claimed some revenge for last August’s 10-wicket defeat to Twickenham on home soil in a game that saw Richmond dismissed for an embarrassing 39.

Skipper Alex Griffiths, below, has not changed his personnel a great deal from last term, but is reaping the rewards of a togetherness in the dressing room.

And Hemmingway believes that, and a change in the rules that see half this season’s fixtures played as limited overs matches, could still see them overhaul Ealing with 12 games to play.

“We’re really pleased with how things are going. We have started well and are optimistic about the rest of the season,” he said.

“We think we are pretty well suited to the limited overs matches because we do not think we have a weak link in our bowling attack.

“In the other format you can get away with one lad – like me – bowling a decent proportion of the overs.

“We’ve got pretty much the same side as last year, but it is more settled and everyone has got to know each other. It is fun to turn up and play.

“There is quite a long way to go and I’m sure Ealing will drop points – everyone does.

“With an extra three points available for batting second there is still time for the gap to close.”

Parminder Singh (4-45), Arun Sandhu (2-20), Clint McCabe (2-29) and Rashid Mullahzadah (2-30) had Richmond all out for 157, with Bavesh Pankhania (59) providing the resistance.

Twickenham found things equally tricky in reply as Hemmingway, Steve Stacey (2-23) and Jimmy Mugnaioni (2-19) strangled the hosts short.

Meanwhile, Teddington picked up their first win of the season at third-bottom Southgate, but they remain rooted to the foot of the table.

Opener Tom Twiney (71) and number six Tom Elliott (46) anchored the visitors’ 213 all out in the face of 6-532 from Lasith Lakshan, before David Keightley (6-69) responded in kind to dismiss the hosts for 134 with the help of skipper James Keightley (2-10).

In Division Three, Barnes lost at home to South Hampstead by one wicket.

Opener James Alder top scored with 51 as Barnes posted a below par 170 all out, and Jared Schmidt’s 5-21 was not quite enough as the visitors got home with nine down.
