Myburgh hints at another year at Sutton CC, and no let up for the final dance

Sutton CC skipper Johann Myburgh has hinted he will be around for at least another year after his charges secured another season in the Premier Division despite losing by four wickets at home to Guildford.

Myburgh hit 75 to help set Guildford 211 to win on Saturday, a target they passed with one ball remaining. With one game remaining, Malden Wanderers and East Molesey have been relegated.

Myburgh said: “We had the realistic aim at the start of the season of not getting relegated, and we achieved that.

“We could have finished higher up the table, but we had a tough start although we lost on some very close games.

“If you look back over the season, you will see some bad points, but there are also some good points.

“The way the squad reacted to the bad start [not winning in seven games] excellently and I am very proud of how they turned it around.”

The South African added: “It promises a lot for next season and we’re already working on our plan for next year.

“From a personal point of view, it has been a challenge but one I have really enjoyed.

“We have some great young players coming through and if I can help them develop and maybe turn professional, then I want to do that.”

Sutton host Reigate Priory tomorrow in the final game of the season, but they will not be treating it as a wind-down game to nothing.

Myburgh said: “We spoke after the Guildford about finishing strongly, and I know the squad will be doing just that.

“It does give us a chance to try out a few different things like slight changes in the batting order, you don’t often get the chance to do those things in a competitive match.”
