Marcus Trescothick has warned England they could risk losing Michael Carberry to the Indian Premier League if nothing comes of his latest call-up.

Croydon-born Carberry has just the solitary appearance for England, but the 32-year-old’s splendid summer with Hampshire has seen him named in the squad T20 internationals against Australia on Thursday and Saturday.

Carberry led Hampshire to FLt20 Finals Day, where they lost to Surrey in the second semi-final, this season and ended with 502 runs in total – the second highest behind Craig Kieswetter.

He has, however, also expressed hopes of an IPL signature and Trescothick, a 2005 Ashes winner, believes England are fast losing the chance to make the most of Carberry.

“He’s in great nick at the moment,” said Trescothick.

“It makes it tough for English counties with the timing of the IPL but if Michael’s going to get to that point, and if England don’t give him the opportunities, he has every right to look beyond and look bigger and better at these competitions around the world.”

Working against Carberry and his bid for England recognition once more – his only appearance was in a Test against Bangladesh in 2010 – is the fact he turns 33 at the end of September, not that that bothers 37-year-old Trescothick.

“I don’t think it’s ever too late unless you’re my age,” he added.

“Coming in at 32, you could still play five years and do the job that people want you to do.

“It does make it tougher in how long you can continue, but if you’re still doing the job there’s no age limit on what you can do.”
