Wimbledon Cricket Club skipper Neil Turk is finally allowing himself to think about playing at the Oval to defend their National Club T20 crown.

The defence actually started in April, and Wimbledon have played eight games to reach Sunday’s regional final against Frocester of the West of England League Premier Division at Church Road.

The victors will face either Peterborough Town or Banbury in the first semi-final of finals day on September 13.

Wimbledon won the title in front of the Sky cameras at Edgbaston last year beating Northern from Merseyside by seven wickets – but until now, Turk’s mind has been more on retaining the Premier Division title.

He said: “When we opened the T20 defence against Uxbridge in April, we had to treat it as just another game, and not think about playing at the Oval.

“There are so many games to play to even get close, and I did not want that distracting from the league.

“But now the Oval it is one game away, that is all we will be thinking about come Sunday.”

Wimbledon took a giant step to defending their league title with a 40-run win over nearest challengers Sunbury on Saturday.

After being put into bat at Church Road, Chris Benham hit 120 off 118 balls to guide Wimbledon to 244-9.

In reply, Sunbury were undone by Turk (3-32) and Mark Smith (3-41) as wickets fell at regular intervals until they finished on 204 all out.

Wimbledon go to Guildford on Saturday, before Spencer and Banstead make the journey to SW19.
