Yemi Oyefuwa was not too disappointed not to feature in Great Britain 82-51 loss to classy Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) outfit Atlanta Dream last Sunday at MEN Arena in Manchester.

The 21-year-old Brixton-born centre from Croydon, who currently plays for University of Maryland in the United States, was part of GB squad that faced last year’s 2010 WNBA finalists in the very first WNBA game in Europe.

She sat on the bench throughout as her team-mates were brushed aside by a star-studded Dream outfit with Guard Coco Miller leading the rout with 21 points.

“The way (coach) Tom Mayer works then you know what he expects,” said Oyefuwa, who started playing basketball only four years ago.

“I am just coming back from an injury so it is a case of where I need to be and where I am right now.

“No one has issues with his rotation system because he does it really well and he knows it is working well.”

Poetry writer Oyefuwa gave her personal assessment on her team’s performance.

“Even though we lost bad I am happy with the result,” continued Oyefuwa.

“Even when we were losing badly we did grow as a team and we did show signs on what we’ve been working on.

"From the past few weeks we’ve been working together so I am happy.”

She reckons playing more WNBA sides on a regular basis will improve the standard of GB team.

“This is the type of teams we do need to play on a regular basis," she said.

"It is the perfect preparation when playing the likes of Czech Republic and Belarus in the European championships.

“Next year will be the Olympics so it is going to be a tough time.

"Now we are aware that we need to improve from now to the time of the Olympics.”

So will we see the towering south Londoner compete in the 2012 London Olympic Team?

“I would like to say yes but you never know what could happen because basketball is an up and down sport.

“I am back here after a year of not really playing because of my injury but GB has invested in me and I am a product of GB so I want to say that you will see me there."
