Brian Adamson was overjoyed to be back on the bench on Tuesday as Corinthian Casuals won their first cup final in more than half a century.

Goals from Dave Hodges and Joel Thompson earned them a shock 2-0 win over Ryman South play-off winners Leatherhead in the Surrey Senior Cup finale at Sutton United's Gander Green Lane ground.

Adamson, sitting in the dugout for the first time since undergoing a triple heart bypass last month, left the managing up to his assistants Keith Holloway and Kim Harris but was invited to lift the cup alongside captain Saheed Sankoh.

Although they won the Spartan League Cup in 1995, Casuals were awarded that by default when their opponents couldn't play and Adamson was delighted to see his team end their barren run of trophies.

"This is the first final they have played in and won since winning this cup in 1954 and they are over the moon about it," said the 57-year-old.

"It is a good bit of history for the club and it was nice for me to be back on the bench.

"I left it all to Kim and Keith though, I just wanted to come down to support the boys and be there.

"I had very little to do with it and I had every confidence in Keith and Kim to do their jobs.

"It wasn't right for me to interfere, I came down to enjoy the day as much as anything."

Casuals repelled a series of Leatherhead attacks in the first half to go into the break level before Hodges opened the scoring on 49 minutes and set up Thompson to head the second just after the hour mark.

"We set our stall out in a certain way to play a certain style," said Adamson.

"They are a quick side and get their shots off very early, Greg Andrews and Tommy Hutchings shoot at every opportunity, that's how they score lots of their goals.

"We played with three centre-backs as that made the area in front of the goal very compacted and meant we could block their shots, which we did.

"Then we changed formation in the second half and opened them up.

"We pushed left-back Dave further up the park to play left midfield, he is a forward anyway and we wanted him to get at them and it worked, he scored one and set up the other."
