Bees boss Andy Scott says the importance of Kevin O’Connor in midfield is behind a move to take a look at out-of-contract defender Stephen Wright.

The 30-year-old former Liverpool and Sunderland right back, released by Coventry City in the summer, is training with Brentford this week.

Scott , who watched his side beat high-flying Peterborough United 2-1 at the weekend, is after cover for current incumbent Michael Spillane.

And while O’Connor can fill-in when required, the Griffin Park chief insists the skipper’s role in the middle is key to his side’s continued success - as it was on Saturday.

“Kevin is the one who really makes us tick and gets us going to way we want to go. Everyone takes his lead,” said the manager.

“Stephen will be training with us this week. It’s the one area where we don’t have any cover. Kevin played there earlier this season, but we need him in midfield.

“We’ll speak to Stephen and see if there is something we can do. He has played in the Champions League with Liverpool and has a good pedigree.”

Brentford came from behind to beat Posh with goals from left-back Craig Woodman and striker Gary Alexander to make it back-to-back League One wins for the first time this season.

And Scott believes a run of three wins in four games has restored new optimism in the camp.

“People have asked questions of them recently, but they stepped up and they have responded,” he added.

“From being doom and gloom and everyone thinking we’re useless, we’re five points from the play-offs and could go on a roll.

“People have come in the side and others have gone out as we’ve had injuries, but it shows we have a squad capable of competing with the best.

“The work rate from every player was fantastic and we’ve shown that we’re capable of playing well and we look forward to the upcoming games now.”
