Epsom Lacrosse celebrated their first home game with a flood of goals in a convincing 18-1 victory over East Grinstead A, writes Ian Ballantine.
The debut performance at Epsom Sports Club, in Woodcote Road, was a powerhouse display to underscore the team’s promotion ambitions.
Rick Cotgreave (six) and Danny Buckland (four) grabbed the lion’s share of the goals but it was a potent all-round exhibition of fast-paced lacrosse.
Epsom’s sharp passing and movement created numerous chances through the first half even though the visitors enjoyed good periods of possession. Cheered on by Epsom Hockey Club players, the home team scorched to a 12-0 half-time lead.
East Grinstead fought hard in the second half but Epsom always looked the more dangerous attacking outfit and Cotgreave capped a brilliant afternoon with a slaloming run and crisp finish just before the final whistle.
Club captain Jonathan Schofield said: “We have been made very welcome here and it was great to have the hockey players cheering us on. We’ve started well but know there are bigger challenges ahead as we have some tough fixtures over the next few weeks.”
