Stubbs: Sutton giant-killing repeat unlikely

TV presenter Ray Stubbs reckons Sutton United’s FA Cup giant-killing of Coventry City is unlikely to be repeated this season - or ever.

The former BBC man was at Gander Green Lane this week with the famous trophy and Crystal Palace legend Geoff Thomas to launch ESPN’s coverage of the world’s most famous domestic cup competition.

It is nearly 21 years since United shocked the Sky Blues 2-1 in the third round care of goals from Tony Rains and Matt Hanlan.

And Stubbs, who worked for the Beeb for 26 years before switching to ESPN last year, would be surprised if it happened again.

“I watched it on television like millions of others. It was a great achievement at the time and still is to this day,” he said.

“Commentator John Motson,w ho was working on the day, still reminisces about it. He talked me through his day at Gander Green Lane before I came here.

“All cup runs are relative and one team will go on an unbelievable run this year. If you start out in the extra preliminary round and get top to the first round, that is a terrific achievement.

“It is difficult to think of another non-League team beating a top flight club in this day and age.

“ESPN will be showing a lot of games this season and I’m looking forward to being involved again.”

Sutton head out on the road to Wembley when they entertain Alton Town this Saturday.
