AFC Wimbledon 2-0 Worcester City
Tony Finn came on to edge the Dons closer to the Blue Square Premier – and then lost a weeks’ wages.
The out-of-form attacker – out of sorts in the last three months – jumped off the bench to inspire a sensational second half that kept Terry Brown’s pacesetters well ahead of the chasing pack.
Finn was due for a rare start but turned up late for the third time this season.
The 27-year-old was slapped with a fine by his unimpressed manager after a match won thanks to goals from Alan Inns and top scorer Jon Main.
Brown said: “He’s the worst time keeper on the planet.
“Get this, he says: ‘if everything goes right, I’ll be there on time, an hour and a half before the game’.
“He doesn’t ever allow for traffic, or for something else going wrong on the way. I wouldn’t mind but he only lives in Wandsworth! I had some harsh words for him. Finny is Finny. He has the ability to play at a much higher level but he won’t because he doesn’t apply himself.
“He’s fined and it isn’t the first time but do I expect any improvement? No. He won’t learn, he never does, but to be fair he’s changed the game today.
“He has murdered Worcester a few times already this season and that’s why he was down to start. He came on and gave us a spark. But as a manager you take him or you leave him.
“What I want to know is how on earth Worcester get here on time being three hours away but Tony can’t from four miles! He leaves you lost for words.”
A poor first 45 by the home side led to a half-time grilling from the manager.
Dons could have been a goal to the good moments before the dressing down. Main’s well-placed penalty was expertly saved by Danny McDonnell after Shabir Khan somehow stayed on the pitch after fouling the forward who was sure to score.
McDonnell guessed right from the spot – and it looked like Wimbledon’s luck was finally evaporating.
But Finn’s introduction, a masterstoke by the manager, swung it. He won the corner Elliott Godfrey found Inns with eight minute after the restart. And, at the second attempt, the defender rammed the ball home and celebrated by jumping into the crowd.
Two minutes later it was all over. Finn played in Danny Kedwell, he saw his shot parried by McDonnell, but typically Main was loitering and he tapped in for 2-0.
A nasty leg injury to Andy Little that looks to have ended his season marred the victory – and two late misses from Danny Kedwell couldn’t sooth Brown’s pain.
He added: “Andy doesn’t look in a good way but I’ll have to check with Mike Rayner.
“He says he heard a crack. So that means I’ll probably have to add a goalkeeper to my list of transfer targets but we’ll have to see. It is a big blow.
“But overall I’m delighted. The first half was hard work but I screamed and shouted in the dressing room and they’ve got another excellent three points that takes us closer to our target.”
