Ks held by Chertsey in first pre-season runout

Chertsey Town 1 Kingstonian 1

Kingstonian kicked off their pre-season campaign on Saturday with a competitive encounter with Combined Counties Premier side Chertsey Town at the LSE Sports Ground in New Malden.

The Ks management team of Alan Dowson, Mark Hams and Martin Tyler took the opportunity to make 10 changes at half-time, which included summer signings Max Hustwick and Adam Thompson.

Ks striker Bobby Traynor made an early breakthrough with a well-taken goal of distinction but the Curfews equalised through a penalty not long after, when skipper John Hamshire was felled.

Both sides piled on the pressure late on but new Ks keeper, trialist Sean Murphy, impressed and made some important saves throughout.

It was Chertsey who threatened as early as the seventh minute, when a powerful header from Wayne Noad saw Murphy at full-stretch push the ball out for a corner.

An unmarked Noad again got his head to the corner but this time went wide. On 11 minutes Ks scored with practically their first attack.

BOBBY TRAYNOR in the Curfews box controlled a cross from the left superbly, turned and belted the ball past a full-stretch Dave Tidy.

On 20 minutes, Noad again slipped a ball through to striker Dale Marvell but skipper Ks Jamie Beer mopped up.

On 23 minutes Rob Sheridan upended Hamshire in the Ks box.

JOHN HAMSHIRE dusted himself down and coolly slotted the spot-kick low into the right-hand corner.

It looked like Chertsey would take the lead when a long, high cross from Paul Brooker fell to an unmarked Marvell hugging the far post but Murphy at full-stretch pushed the ball out.

Ks responded when a rasping drive from David Suchy was blocked by a full-stretch Tidy. Noad then sent in a penetrating cross from the right that found Marvell's head but again Murphy made an excellent block.

With two minutes to the break, Chertsey player-manager Kevin Cooper burst into the Ks box but Murphy came racing out and pushed the ball away.

With a new Ks side for the second half apart from Murphy both defences were in the ascendancy until the latter stages.

On only 47 minutes Sol Patterson-Bonner was unlucky not to put the K's ahead when his sweetly struck rising drive thundered off the inside of the bar with Tidy beaten.

A Phil Williams run looked promising - he found Julien Thompson but he blasted over. Murphy raced out his box to head the ball away but not to safety, Chertsey sub Matt Barratt whipped the ball into the Ks box but iall to no avail.

On 77 minutes, Dean Lodge took off on one of his trademark lightning runs down the left and fired across the face of the Curfews goal.

Chertsey replied with a Hamshire free-kick that found sub Lee Taylor close in but he side-footed wide. With five minutes to go a Julian Thompson lob set Lodge free down the left but Tidy made an an excellent block.

Williams tried again to find the dangerous Lodge but Tidy was there to smother. In the final minute a Chertsey corner from Hamshire was tipped away by an alert Murphy.
