There were signs of strength against Solihull Moors on Saturday, but ultimately too much of the game was spent in a lull with basic mistakes gifting an opening day win to the National League North champions.

Indeed, in the first half Sutton United were excellent and unlucky to be going in level despite falling behind after 38 minutes through a Ryan Beswick goal.

The half finished on a high with a Dean Beckwith equaliser, but that momentum was not carried through into the second half at all – if truth be told, Solihull were actually fairly comfortable in that period.

Despite the defeat on Saturday, there is no need to despair with another 45 games to come.

Forest Green Rovers tonight should be an interesting test after the bookies’ favourite for the title being defeated by unfancied Boreham Wood on Saturday.

Whilst Mark Cooper’s men will be the favourites on Tuesday night too, they are definitely beatable and if United can play like they did in the first half against Solihull for the whole 90 minutes in Gloucestershire, then they have every chance of picking up a good result.

I don’t think Saturday’s performance or result should bring on a panic at Gander Green Lane, but with tough away fixtures at Forest Green and Lincoln to come over the next week, the side need to dig in to grind out results.

However, whatever happens in this week to come let’s keep getting behind the team and help them to a strong season in the National League.
