Kingston boxer Danny Parsons is embarking on a road less travelled in a bid to reach the top.

The 23-year-old was forced to pull out of his professional debut with Goodwin Promotions at York Hall last month, due to poor ticket sales.

Parsons had got nowhere near his contractual commitment to sell 100 tickets for the Independence Day event and withdrew from the contest.

The former Teddington School student, who lives a stone’s throw from Kingsmeadow stadium, will instead fight as the ‘away’ fighter when he takes on Portsmouth’s Mwenya Chisanga at York Hall on September 5.

And while that will make it more difficult for him to score a victory, Parsons is determined to prove a point.

“As an away fighter you do not have that commitment to sell the tickets so there is less pressure from that point of view,” he said.

“But on the flip side the opponent is usually looking for a journeyman fighter to try and beat up, look good and improve their ranking.

“They are usually viewed as the better fighter, but I know this is a 50-50 fight and it has worked out well that it is at York Hall too.”

He added: “It is always harder to be the away fighter, so it is going to be tough, but it was either that or call it a day.

“I need to build my following to help with ticket sales and this is an easier way of doing it. I cannot keep asking the same people to come and watch me fight.

“I’m not doing it for the money. I want do as well as I can, but with a young family I cannot afford not to get a bit of money with all the training I am doing.

“So this is getting me some money without the commitment, increasing my exposure and hopefully it will be a chance to prove I am good enough.

“Having missed the last fight I have taken no time off so I am in great shape for it and more than ready.”
