Laurie Evans has certainly been making some noise with the bat of late – but his captain Varun Chopra insists this is just the start for the Purley ace.

After hitting three Championships hundreds in 2013, Evans finally recorded his first century in almost two years at the end of last month in Warwickshire's draw with Sussex.

And he did so in some style too, hitting 213 not out as well as, alongside Tim Ambrose, recording Warwickshire’s highest ever sixth-wicket partnership and the fourth-highest in Championship history with 327.

Unfortunately he followed this up with scores of two and a duck in Warwickshire’s next Championship match against Yorkshire, before hitting a T20 Blast 35 in victory over Worcestershire.

And it is this consistency that Chopra admits is all that lacking as Evans bids to make a name for himself in English cricket.

“Laurie has played some really important innings for us, particularly in the T20 format,” Chopra said.

“Consistency will be crucial for him if he wants to make the next step.

“He is very driven and very ambitious but when you are batting at four or five it can be difficult to have that consistency, you have to bat to the situation.

“But Laurie is definitely someone with the talent and the drive to go further in the game. He has that ambition, he wants to progress as far as he can go.

“It’s still a bit away for him but he wants to be there, he worked hard on his four-day cricket this year and he has been pretty good, he has got to keep pushing and keep his place and that will give him confidence.

“Then he can keep growing and developing, he is a young 27, if you see what I mean.

"He has not actually played that much cricket but with more experience he has still got a lot more to give.”

Evans will get further chances to swing his bat as Warwickshire look to go one better in this year’s Royal London One Day Cup, having lost last year’s inaugural final to Durham.

And Chopra is adamant that Kiwi Brendon McCullum can help Evans and co go one better this time around.

“Brendon McCullum has been brilliant his approach to the game and his batting were something that we desperately needed,” Chopra added.

“We have got skilled batsmen, good manipulators of the ball into gaps but his explosive power is something we have lacked.

“If he bats for half an hour he can take a game away from you.

“He is a great overseas player, he wants to give back and help out as much as possible.”
