Croydon Harriers’ men’s and women’s team gave their promotion chances to the top tier of the Southern Athletics League a timely boost with a hard-fought win at Eltham on Saturday.

The Croydon squad, which numbered more than 50, notched six event maximums and 15 A event victories throughout the afternoon - lifting them to third in the Division Two East table.

In the throws, the women’s team scored 31 out of a possible 32 points with dominant displays.

Sisters Emma (35.77m) and Zoe Fossett (27.75m) took maximum points in the javelin.

The duo of Saskia Navratnam and Tamara Reid also scooped double firsts in the shot putt and discus.

Sonyce Archer set a lifetime best in the long jump of 5.20m to triumph, and team captain Stevie Lawrence led from the front to win the 400m in 60.96secs.

Lawrence had earlier won the B pole vault in 2.20m with Zoe Fossett (2.65m) setting six personal bests to win clearly.

Former GB junior international Twinelle Hopeson enjoyed two wins in the 100m (12.39secs) and 100m hurdles (15.11secs), the latter moving her up to 78th in the UK rankings for the season.

Hopeson combined with Archer, Chanice Gordon and Irene Afriye to win the 4x100m in 50.52secs.

In the men’s section, Omar Reid (40.43m) and Giacomo Spagnoli (29.10m) took double first in the discus, and Patrick Lucas (1:58.77) and Kieron Connor (1:59.25) replicated that feat in the 800m.

There were also wins for 2014 junior boys' English Schools champ Tyrese Johnson-Fisher (100m, 11.01secs), Surrey Schools silver medallist Harvey Stainthorpe (400m, 51.93secs), GB junior cross-country international Peter Chambers (5,000m, 15:32) and Yusuf Erol (Hammer, 34.61m).

Final results - Croydon (211), Ashford (194), Ipswich (169) and Cambridge (136).

Croydon will be hoping for more of the same at their next fixture at Croydon Arena on July 4.

In the England Championships at Bedford, Damien Powell (10.97secs, U20 men’s 100m) and Robert Sakala (14.27secs, U18 boys' 100m hurdles) were in action.

At the U15s and U13s UK Youth Development League at Reading, Croydon’s squad finished in fourth, representing their best result in this league.

Four Croydon Harriers pulled on Surrey colours to represent the county at the U17 South-East Inter Counties at Erith.

Aliyah Headley threw a lifetime best in the hammer (36.61m) to finish sixth, and Ola Olufemi-Krakue went one better in the triple jump leaping to 10.08m.

Lekan Ogunlana enjoyed two events, finishing fourth in the javelin with a 48.45m effort and leaping to 1.85m in the high jump for joint third.

Chuks Ajeh won his 100m race in 11.31secs and Sophie Ellis celebrated her English Schools selection with a 11.54secs win in the 80m hurdles.

At the Richmond 10km, David Brown led the charge with a personal best of 36:21 to finish 57th, while Glenn Barden was 18 seconds behind in 60th.

Ultra-marathoner Mark Lynch was the club’s third scorer in 111th in 38:54. The scoring trio finished 13th of the 28 teams which closed in.

Eight Harriers celebrated being selected for the English Schools championships next month, they are David Olajiga, Sophie Elliss, Tosin Salami, Rhiannon Gayle, Marcia Sey, Obi Onyejekwe, Tyrese Johnson-Fisher and Mariam Ojobowale.

This weekend sees the junior team continue their UKYDL Southern Premier 2 campaign at Croydon Arena on Sunday.
