Surbiton Ladies head coach Brett Garrard has told his invincibles to enjoy their success while it lasts – because it may never happen again.

Goals from Jenna Woolven, Abi Robinson and Rebecca Herbert secured a 3-2 Women’s Cup triumph over Clifton on Saturday to land a second league and cup double in successive seasons.

The result meant the Sugden Road club’s women completed the whole domestic season without losing a game, having also claimed National Indoor League promotion with a 100 per cent winning record.

The only blemish on their campaign was a EuroHockey Club Champions Cup quarter final exit, which came after they lost a penalty shuttle shootout having drawn 1-1 with Spanish side Club Campo de Madrid.

Garrard, right, is already turning attentions to defending their titles next term and going one better in Europe, but for now he wants his team to savour the moment while they can.

“I never set targets, so it never occurred to me that an unbeaten season might be possible,” he said.

“Will we ever have season like this again? It has been a once in a lifetime experience.

“We will lose a game one day. That is part and parcel of sport.

“The most pleasing thing for me – as a coach – is that the players have improved individually and as a team we have expanded the way we play.

“The challenge is to keep developing and improving.

He added: “This team has been three years in the making.

“It will be tough next season given it is an Olympic year. Time will tell if this group stays together.”

* Surbiton’s men can match the club’s women by winning the Men’s Cup on Saturday.
